(37) Way Beyond Your Bucket List

Updated: Jul 25, 2023

Seize the day can go way beyond a bucket list.

There was a young woman who wanted to make a video; because she believed in carpe diem (seize the day), she took a deep breath, picked up her camera, and walked out the door.

And started a worldwide movement. Her name is Kalima Silverman, and the movement is Big Talk (as in skipping the small talk).

She approached all manner of strangers and asked if she could interview them. Those who said Yes never expected this question: What is the one thing you want to do before you die?

After some stumbling, the answers came:

I’d take a road trip, and tell him I love him.

I’d get on an airplane, and go be with my son.

Reconcile with my father and say I love you.

Seize the day means now.

Before you die, the one thing you would want to do is the one thing that will lift your life right now: like healing a relationship; or diving into a deeply personal desire (the one that has been gathering dust for far too long); or ?

Bronni Ware, who worked with the dying, compiled a list of their five biggest regrets; here is one: I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

And what can be truer to your own life than acting on the before-death question? And acting on it now.
